The Israeli military said attempts to intercept a projectile launched from Yemen were unsuccessful and it fell in a public park early on Saturday.

A Houthi military spokesman said the group struck a military target using a hypersonic ballistic missile.

The Houthis, an Iran-supported militia that controls north-western Yemen, started assaulting Israel and international shipping vessels soon after the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023, claiming to do so in solidarity with Palestinians.

Since then, Israel’s military says roughly 400 missiles and drones have been fired at the country from Yemen, most of which have been intercepted.

Following the missile strike early on Saturday, Magen David Adom, or MDA — Israel’s emergency medical service — said it had treated 16 people it said were “understandably mildly injured” from glass shards from broken windows in nearby buildings.

It said another 14 people suffered minor injuries on their way to protected areas were also treated.

Israel carried out a series of strikes this week targeting what it said were Houthi military sites, including ports and energy infrastructure in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. Nine people died in the port of Salif and the Ras Issa oil terminal, Houthi-run Al Masirah TV reported.

The Houthis have threatened to keep up their assaults until the war in Gaza concludes.
